News : Call Centre Lays Off 90 Staff at Swansea Enterprise Park
May 20, 2014 -- His catchphrase is "happy people sell", but the company run by Nev Wilshire, the star of the hit BBC Three show The Call Centre, has had to lay 90 staff off.
But Save Britain Money, which employs around 700 people in Swansea Enterprise Park, said the measures were short-term.
The Post was contacted by a former employee concerned at the implications for ex-colleagues.
"As per Government rules, these people will only get part of their wage plus £125 to live on," said the ex-worker who wished to remain anonymous.
Company market director Jon Curtis gave details of the measures. "I can confirm that there have been some short term layoffs in the Nationwide Energy Services part of our group," he said.
"These staff were processing Government-funded energy improvements. Unfortunately Government funding for these measures ended on March 31.
"The lack of funding has impacted on all major players in the industry with the Marks Group and D&G having already made redundancies, leaving us as the last company forced to act."
Mr Curtis said 90 of the company's Nationwide Energy Services staff were laid off on May 9 for four to six weeks.
And, although there were no guarantees, he said the company intended to re-employ all staff who wished to return.
"To ensure that these staff have a job to come back to we have been busy preparing our new Green Deal product," said Mr Curtis. "And following recent Government announcements, this launch will happen in early June.
"To support the launch we have already started bringing back a small number of the staff laid-off. The rest of the group has continued to trade normally during this difficult period."
Last month Nev admitted that the show might not return for a third series.
"I need to have two or three months of getting the business back on track after being distracted for a few months," he said.
