News : Theft of AT&T Subscriber Details Under Investigation in Mexico
Mexico City, Mexico, April15, 2015 -- Mexican authorities said they have launched a preliminary investigation into the alleged theft of AT&T subscriber information from a call center located in the Latin American country.
The Federal Institute for Information Access and Data Protection, or IFAI, made the decision Monday after the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on April 8 fined the wireless carrier over the breaches, the largest penalty ever imposed by that agency for data-security violations.
The FCC accused AT&T of not protecting the personal information of U.S. customers, whose data, including social security numbers, was stolen from call centers in Colombia, Mexico and the Philippines.
Mexican media said the theft in Mexico was carried out by three employees of Teleperformance, a provider of call center services to AT&T, IFAI said in a statement.
The Mexico City-based IFAI said it decided to launch a preliminary investigation due to potential non-compliance with Mexico's Federal Law on Protection of Personal Data.
Call center staff in the three countries were paid to look up customer information, according to several U.S. media outlets, which have reported that the objective of the data theft was to unlock cellular phones and make them available for use on any wireless network.
