News : Tirupur City Police Launches Helpline
Tirupur, India, May 11, 2015 -- The city police launched a helpline system primarily for senior citizens and women who have to remain alone in the house during night hours, tapping the potential and technological reach offered by the cell phones.
An awareness programme was also launched by the police on the day to help the people understand the nuances of the project and make them get its benefits.
Explaining the features of the scheme, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) R. Thirunavukkarasu told The Hindu that as part of the project, police personnel would educate the senior citizens and women to feed a select number each of the nearest police station, office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police and police control room as ‘speed dials’ in their mobile phones.
"We have assigned the numbers 2, 5 and 8 in the mobile phone keypads to feed the select three numbers because 2, 5 and 8 comes in a straight line and also falls in the middle of the keypad.
"Once fed, the elders or women need only to press any of these numbers at the time of any emergency situations and the police would come to their rescue as part of improving our interface with the people.
"They need not even have to speak a single word or type any message to get the assistance of the police as the details of the elders/ women who stay alone in areas under the city will be stored in the police data base," he said.

According to the police officials, this method comes in handy when elders or women have to face an intruder in their house or face any health ailments that needed assistance.
The city police had also introduced two mobile phone numbers 94897-71100 and 94876-61100 in which people who need assistances could send free SMS.
