Moncton, NB, Canada, Feb, 2020 -- American package delivery and logistics company UPS confirmed 168 people at its Moncton call centre were laid off this week.
"We understand that this is a difficult time for our employees in Moncton and we are supporting them with this change through one-on-one meetings with their management to discuss their next steps with the company," the company said in a statement.
"These decisions are not made lightly and do not reflect the quality of work being done by employees."
It also said outcomes for the employees affected could include "promotions, lateral moves, or finding employment with another company."
"We are encouraging our employees to apply for open positions that they qualify for at UPS, while offering severance packages and assisting employees who part with the company to find new employment."
UPS is changing how some of its transactional Global Business Services work.
"As part of our company-wide transformation, our employees will focus on strategic work that can make a greater impact on our business, while providing them with enhanced career opportunities," the statement said. "These changes will improve our responsiveness to customers and enable growth with more strategic job opportunities."
