News : Walgreens Adding 140 Workers
Muscle Shoals, AL, USA, April, 2017 -- When the Walgreens Customer Call Center set up office at Southgate Mall 13 years ago, company officials envisioned as many as 500 employees filling the center one day.
Today, that number has been met, and the company is sending out a call for more.
Walgreens is in the process of hiring approximately 140 employees, a figure that will boost employment to 640.
Tina Cofield, human resource manager for the call center, said the company is pleased with the employee base the Shoals is providing for the 24/7 operations.
"These people are customer-service representatives," Cofield said. "They are front line. We have found a lot of people who are really good employees. They stay with us, and we provide a lot of good benefits for them. The talent here is really, really good."
Customer-service jobs start at $10.50 an hour and include full benefits, she said.
The company already has started the hiring process, and hopes to have the 140 additions on board by the end of July, Cofield said.
The Muscle Shoals location was selected in 2004 from 3,000 communities that initially were surveyed, officials said.
Walgreens completed a 15,000-square-foot expansion in 2013 that brought the center’s size to 62,000 square feet. That project added 189 seats.
Mayor David Bradford said Walgreens officials have spoken highly of the employment base in the Shoals.
"The center's had a very good record and very good response in customer service," Bradford said. "People in this area have been courteous and responsive.
"Walgreens has been a great corporate partner in the Shoals for many years, and provides good employment and benefits while other companies moved out of the United States. As part of the global Walgreens-Boots Alliance health and well-being enterprise, you can start your career in Muscle Shoals and have growth opportunities throughout the United States and much of the world. We enjoy a great relationship with one of America's best companies."
Forrest Wright, president of the Shoals Economic Development Authority, said the expansion makes a statement about those at the call center, as well as the Shoals and state in general.
"It goes without saying, a 600-plus employee operation is very important to the state of Alabama and the Shoals," Wright said. "To have a known company such as Walgreens select Muscle Shoals as a growth center is a testament to the state and community’s 'can-do' attitude.
"This expansion could not have occurred without strong leadership and support from the Alabama Department of Commerce and the state Legislature. And the most important partners are the Walgreens employees who, day in and day out, make this center successful."
Greg Canfield, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, called the expansion "a vote of confidence."
"The Walgreens customer care center in the Shoals acts as a vital connection between the company and its vast customer base across the nation, and Walgreens’ move to significantly expand the workforce at the Alabama facility is a strong vote of confidence in the operation," Canfield said.
