News : Helpline Number of Chandigarh Traffic Police ‘Clicks’ With City Residents
Chandigarh, India, July 6, 2016 -- The helpline number of the UT traffic police has caught the attention of city residents who are busy sending their complaints and suggestions to the department. The popularity of the helpline number 9779580985 can be gauged from the fact that in a day the police recieves over 100 responses, which keeps them on their toes.
Sharing details regarding the nature of complaints which pour in, a official in-charge of handling the number said, "In a day, we receive around 50 to 100 messages. On weekdays are volume is usually high which drops during weekends. We receive complaints, suggestions, ideas from the residents. This gives us an opportunity to connect with them and gain their confidence. We have also been successful in gaining a lot of public support though this exercise."

In a day, the helpline number receives around 10 complaints regarding traffic violations while there are a few complaints pertaining to the traffic congestion as well. Elaborating on the complaints, DSP Traffic and R&D Rajiv Ambasta said, "The city residents click pictures of traffic violations pertaining to jumping of red lights, wrong parking among others. In a day, we receive around 10 such complaints. Out of these, we are able to act on only five complaints as in many cases the pictures clicked are not clear." DSP Ambasta further added, "In all, the whole exercise of having a Facebook page and a WhatsApp number has proved very beneficial. We also upload videos pertaining to traffic accidents on our page which helps making people aware about rash driving."
"People have suggested us to have lights at roundabouts especially at the grain market area. We accepted the suggestion and now lights have been installed at roundabouts which helps in managing traffic congestion at peak hours. The residents also come up with suggestions if they see a wrong signage, said an officer.
