News : Wolverine Worldwide Pink Slips 90 Workers
ROCKFORD, MI, Dec 11, 2013 -- Wolverine Worldwide is pink-slipping 90 positions at its Rockford headquarters as part of a relocation of customer service and consumer relation operations to an Indiana facility.
The footwear provider inherited the Richmond, Ind., location with its acquisition of four Boston-based brands that include Sperry Top-Sider and Keds.
"We are consolidating all customer service and consumer relations functions there," said Christi Cowdin, company spokeswoman. "Having all brands represented in one geography makes a lot of sense."
The layoff announced this week affects 60 full-time and 30 temporary workers, who have been integrated in the company’s four operating groups. The positions will be phased out over several months in 2014 as operations transition to Indiana, Cowdin said.
She added that the 60 full-time positions the region is losing will be replaced with 70 new hires Wolverine expects to make in the coming year. Most of the new jobs will be at the company’s Rockford headquarters, where about 900 employees work.
"We are growing here in Michigan because of the acquisition," said Cowdin, adding that the new Michigan jobs will be primarily professional positions in corporate service or with one of the company’s 16 brand.
"It’s very important to us to have a strong workforce here in Michigan," Cowdin said. "We want to keep adding to the talent pool."
She added that meetings were held this week to give employees advance notice so they have time to apply for other positions in Wolverine’s Michigan operations. Displaced employees also can bid for the new positions in Indiana call center if they are open to relocating.
