News : Women Helpline Launched in Muzaffarnagar
Meerut, India, March 14, 2016 -- To curb crime against women, Uttar Pradesh police has launched its helpline-- Women Power Line 1090-- in Muzaffarnagar district. On the occasion, Inspector General of Lucknow zone, Navneet Sikera, asked the school and college girls to report if they notice anything wrong, whether it is in their homes or outside. The IG inaugurated the helpline in association with an NGO, 'Pryatn', at Ajmat Ali Girls Inter College.
WPL-1090, a toll free number dedicated to receive women's grievances, was set up in November 2012. The service was started to deal with the crime against women. The idea to start the helpline came after cases of ragging against women started to increase in universities. In the past four years, about 4.65 lakh cases were registered on the helpline and 3.82 lakh have been resolved. "The helpline has been launched with the purpose of providing effective help to girls and women who become victims of anti-social behaviour like eve-teasing, harassment, disrespect, or any other form of violence," he said.
The WPL personnel first go for a counselling and then take legal action against the offender.
"The mission of WPL is to control crimes against women and create a society where women can protest against harassment and molestation with courage," the IG said.
