News : Xerox Recalling Workers at its Colorado Springs Call Center
Colorado Springs, CO, USA, May 9, 2016 -- Talk about a comeback.
Xerox Corp. is recalling several hundred employees who were told in late March they were being laid off from the company's Colorado Springs call center, a company spokesman said Monday.
The company originally said it was letting go of 350 workers from its call center, 2424 Garden of the Gods Road on the Springs' northwest side, effective May 31. Xerox said the cuts were necessary because of the changing needs of a client, for whom many of the employees fielded phone calls.
The actual number of job cuts turned out to be 328, said Kevin Lightfoot, a Xerox spokesman.
Now, however, that same client has seen an increase in its business, Lightfoot said. Last week, it told Xerox that it needed the company to continue to provide service, which triggered the need to bring back the employees, he said.
"That's part of our business," Lightfoot said. "Our clients look for us to be flexible and responsive, to be able to ramp up and scale back as necessary."
Of the 328 people who were notified they'd lose their jobs, 128 already had been placed in positions with other Xerox clients, Lightfoot said. The company had said at the time of the layoff announcement that laid-off workers would have the opportunity to apply for jobs within the company.
Of the remaining 200 employees, the company is contacting them about returning; so far, 90 have agreed to come back, Lightfoot said.
"We started making some calls late last week and over the weekend," he said.
Norwalk, Conn.-based Xerox provides copying, back-office support and outsourcing services at its Springs call center. The company also has operations in Aurora, Denver, Greeley and Highlands Ranch.
