News : Yahoo Expansion On Track for Early 2015 Move-in
June 16, 2014 -- Construction on Yahoo’s second project in the Town of Lockport is about half done and on track for the Internet provider to start moving in sometime in early 2015, an executive told the town Industrial Development Agency last week.
The work that’s being done now includes one and a half of the three buildings. That’s one data "pod" and half of its two-story administrative office and call center building, data center facilities director Paul Bonaro told the IDA Board of Directors.
Bonaro said the placement of structural steel for the data pod began in March and is now complete. Now, steel is being put in for the administrative and call center.
A new electric substation is being built for the new buildings. The substation is to be active in August and the electrical system is to receive its first full test in November, Bonaro said.
The other half of the project includes the second half of the administrative building will hold computer equipment for Yahoo’s Internet operations and a second data pod. They are to follow sometime after completion of the current work.
Last fall, Yahoo first announced its expansion in the town’s Industrial Development Agency Park.
The expansion in its entirety will adjoin the current Yahoo data center complex at the corner of IDA Park Drive and Junction Road in the town industrial park. All three buildings will be in the north east corner of the Yahoo property, totaling 63 acres.
Bonaro said Yahoo has 115 call center employees already at work in a temporary spot at Sheridan Meadows Corporate Park on Sheridan Drive in Amherst. IDA Executive Director David R. Kinyon said all employees had to have at least a bachelor’s degree with a grade-point average of at least 3.2 out of 4.
Bonaro said several of the call center workers already have been transferred to jobs at the Lockport data center.
"We’ve had people from the data center move on to headquarters in Sunnyvale (Calif.)," Bonaro said. "It shows there’s a career path."
