Industry Research : Million Telemarketing Calls a Day: ACMA
New research by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) suggests that more than a million telemarketing calls are made to Australians every day.
The ACMA recently undertook a survey which indicated that just over half of respondents had received an unsolicited telemarketing call in the last six months.
Of those, 18 per cent had received one or more telemarketing calls a day; 32 per cent had received calls at least once a week of more often (but less than daily); and 27 per cent received them at least once a month or more. Surprisingly the survey also indicated that there was a small but significant number of Australians who received telemarketing calls who did not think it is a problem.
Unsolicited telemarketing calls are not allowed to numbers on the Do Not Call Register without consent from the line owner or unless the telemarketer/fax marketer falls into a group allowed to make designated telemarketing calls such as charities, research companies, political parties and educational institutions.
ACMA data shows there are currently 8.5 million home, mobile and fax numbers listed on the register and in 2011-12 and the ACMA received 21,969 complaints from Australians with numbers listed on the Do Not Call Register about unsolicited telemarketing calls. The survey included those both on and not on the register, with about 37 per cent of those surveyed reported having their home phone listed on the Do Not Call Register.
The ACMA said telemarketing was an effective marketing tool, but businesses must follow the Do Not Call rules by not calling consumers who had listed their numbers on the Register.
