Industry Research : Negros Oriental Gains Ground as Potential Site for IT Investments
Negros Oriental, the other half of the third largest island in the Philippines, is fast gaining a foothold in the information technology/business process outsourcing (IT/BPO) industry in Central Visayas.
Although Cebu continues to dominate the IT/BPO investments in the region, the year 2012 showed that Negros Oriental is quickly gaining a reputation as a potential site for IT/BPO investments.
By the end of last year, Negros Oriental hosts 12 IT/BPO companies. Dumaguete City, the capital of Negros Oriental, was earlier listed as one of the Top 10 Best Outsourcing locations in the Philippines after hosting numerous call centers and BPO companies.
Meanwhile, IT and IT-enabled services, including BPOs, continued to expand in the region.
The Cebu Investment Promotion Center (CIPC) reported that 17 new foreign BPO companies opened shop in Cebu last year.
The IT/BPO industry now employs over 100,000 workers in the region.
This number is seen to rise with the entry of new IT/BPO companies and the expansion of existing ones, according to the Regional Development Council (RDC-7) in a report.
Companies located in economic zones in Cebu and Negros Oriental alone generated over US$516 million in revenues in 2012.
This is 21.8% higher than the revenues generated in 2011.
